3rd floor Takanawa / 高輪の三階

This is a renovation of an apartment which is located in the center of a townhouse in Tokyo. The renovation was done mainly on the 3rd floor ; changing the interior of the rooms, setting the new windows and the iron handrails which the owner purchased and back from Europe, an insulation retrofit and widening of the balconies.

Designing, constructing and the client's move back from Europe were managed in the short period. In this tight schedule, the airy space with full of day light was achieved by deliberately combining materials, colors and ready-made products.

Alongside the carpenter's work,  the owner hacked ready-made furniture and did DIY with scrap wood, then the architect redesigned total image. Client, constructor and architect, the three of the agents refined the image of the space and shared it on the site. This project is happy "bricolage" by three of them.

Apartment Ishikawadai / 石川台のアパート

This is a renovation of an apartment. In order to make clear the hidden composition in the previous plan with " three boxes and in-between space", some walls, doors and ceilings are removed and each box wrapped by different material. This is a trial to achieve a big effect by small changes.

Three boxes, each of which contains toilet, kitchen or bedroom, have niches like a bench, a tatami room or a cabinet, which create various scenes in the daily life. The view from the tatami room to bedroom is diagonally passing through the living space, which makes this apartment larger than in reality. The sunken blue tile space along the window and the baseboard in the bed room which is wider than usual offer space for miscellaneous goods. Finally, the rough-texture beam through the apartment has an effect to accommodate the mixture of various materials and different-style things.

15 boxes with 15 yards and 15 terraces / 15の箱と15庭と15のテラス

This is a proposal for 5 housing on the hill, which is part of the housing land development with 588 housing in total.

In general, a land boundary creates a clearance gap which enwraps the house as an oblate and, spatially, cut off relationship with neighbors. Where some houses are to be planned together, there is a possibility that this boundary can become fuzzy by planning and neighbor-gathering can be facilitated. We would like to propose the way of gathering which is different from the apartment houses or single-family houses.

In this project, the five houses are composed of 15 boxes and 15 yards which are laid out in a checkerboard pattern in order to utilize the spaces between buildings positively. Large garages, small yards and terraces like a pocket park, half buried boxes, which are joined along the landscape, make the borderlines fuzzy and encourage neighbors' sharing of in-between spaces.
